Bridging the Gaps: Investigating the Complex Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tuberculosis Records in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the temporal evolution, spatial distribution, and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis records in a northeastern state of Brazil. METHODS: This is an ecological study involving all diagnoses of Tuberculosis (TB) in residents of the state of Pernambuco/Brazil. Data were extracted from the National System of Notifiable Diseases. A pre-pandemic COVID-19 temporal analysis (2001-2019), a spatial analysis before (2015-2019) and during the first two pandemic years (2020-2021), and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cases of TB diagnoses in Pernambuco in the years 2020 and 2021 were performed. Inflection point regression models, Global and Local Moran's statistics, and spatial scan statistics were used. RESULTS: In the period from 2001 to 2019, 91,225 cases of TB were registered in Pernambuco (48.40/100,000 inhabitants), with a tendency of growth starting in 2007 (0.7% per year; p = 0.005). In the pre-pandemic period (2015-2019), 10.8% (n = 20) of Pernambuco municipalities had TB incidence rates below 10/100,000. In 2020, this percentage reached 27.0% (n = 50) and in 2021 it was 17.8% (n = 33). Risk clusters were identified in the eastern region of the state, with five clusters in the pre-pandemic period and in 2021 and six in 2020. In the first year of the pandemic, an 8.5% reduction in the number of new TB cases was observed. In 2021, the state showed a slight increase (1.1%) in the number of new TB cases. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused a reduction in the number of new TB case reports in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.

Syphilis among pregnant women in Northeast Brazil from 2008 to 2015: a trend analysis according to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: The number of syphilis cases among pregnant women in Brazil has increased. This study aimed to analyze the temporal trend of syphilis indicators among pregnant women in Northeast Brazil. METHODS: A time-series study was performed. RESULTS: We observed an increase in the detection rate of syphilis among pregnant women, those aged 15-19 years, and those of brown ethnicity. A strong correlation was observed between the detection rate of syphilis and family health strategy coverage. CONCLUSIONS: Despite an increase in primary care coverage, The increase in cases of syphilis among pregnant women is still considered a challenge.

Este trabalho objetiva apresentar o ensaio fotográfico das paredes do antigo presídio Desembargador Luiz de Oliveira Souza, em Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brasil. Trata-se de um produto do projeto de extensão intitulado "Itinerários, mostras de vidas", cujo objetivo é debater a realidade social sob a ótica do diálogo entre diferentes formas de expressão. Após desativação, o prédio foi doado à Universidade Federal de Alagoas (Ufal), sendo incorporado ao campus Arapiraca. Assim, surgiu a necessidade de manter um registro post factum do que um dia foi lugar de cumprimentos de penas. Trata-se de um ensaio capaz de revelar o cotidiano dos indivíduos que lá estiveram. Sob as lentes da câmera, as imagens contam-nos uma história.(AU)

This article presents a photographic essay of the walls of the former prison Desembargador Luiz de Oliveira Souza in Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil. It is one of the products of the extension project " Itinerários, mostras de vidas " (Itineraries, an exhibition of lives), whose aim is to debate social reality through the lens of dialogue between different forms of expression. After the prison was closed, the building was donated to the Federal University of Alagoas and incorporated into the Arapiraca campus. The need then arose to make a post factum record of what was once a place where sentences were served. The article comprises an essay capable of revealing the daily life of the individuals who were there. The images depict a story told through the lens of a camera.(AU)

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar el ensayo fotográfico de las paredes del antiguo presidio Desembargador Luiz de Oliveira Souza, Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brasil. Se trata de un producto del proyecto de extensión titulado " Itinerários, mostras de vidas ", cuyo objetivo es debatir la realidad social bajo la óptica del diálogo entre diferentes formas de expresión. Después de la desactivación, el edificio fue donado a la Universidad Federal de Alagoas, habiéndose incorporado al campus Arapiraca. De esa forma, surgió la necesidad de mantener un registro post factum de lo que un día fue un local de cumplimiento de condenas. Se trata de un ensayo capaz de revelar el cotidiano de los individuos que estuvieron allí. A través de las lentes de la cámara las imágenes nos contaron una historia.(AU)
